We had an urban experience this weekend seeking the other-worldly along Albuquerque, New Mexico’s piece of the Historic Route 66…
Much different in experience was this journey through the heart of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Full of activity and movement long absent from the aftershocked lands of Trinity Site in our last visit.. Here we felt the pulse of identities in collision. Looking down at the sidewalks story I began to imagine all the steps that led to our part on this day.
New Mexico once operated and maintained a 465 mile portion of the Historic Route 66 Highway. As the efforts of the National Interstate system began in the 50’s and 60’s, section by section the highway has changed or in some parts become impassible. As noted on rt66nm.org “…because of its North/South alignment being rerouted East/West in 1937, New Mexico, in downtown Albuquerque, has the only place where Route 66 actually crossed itself.”
It was no surprise learning this fact as I read about our history with Route 66, Albuquerque usually manifesting the energy that allows her inhabitants to cross themselves frequently. We locals will smile when we sing to you the warnings of the “Land of Entrapment ~ where you are sure to never leave…and if you do, a return will be inevitable”….but I assure you we are ever so serious in the truth of it. A personal love of dwelling in this land is the vast exposure, there is nowhere to hide, you are exposed and vulnerable…a person must face much of themselves in the high dessert of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
And so we traveled along from East to West, stretching the city end to end. We felt the laughter and tasted the tears of the past. We offered ourselves as the present witnesses to the joy and grief pouring in the mix of now and from there heard the song of this desert Verismo.
We leave the urban pulse and will be having images and tales from the road in locations like Petroglyphs, Tent Rocks and many more. A portion of the proceeds from the Walking Enchantment project sales will benefit the top nominated charities sponsored in our fundraising program that will be announced very soon in August 2014! We appreciate your support of this project and our donation opportunities with your friends, family and social media communities!
Until the next location….
